Our Flashing System
Correct flashing protects the places where shingles end, change direction, meet a wall, or surround a roof penetration.
OUR FLASHING SYSTEM
THE MOST IMPORTANT DAY FOR A ROOF IS INSTALLATION DAY.
Correct flashing protects the places where shingles end, change direction, meet a wall, or surround a roof penetration. The Backed by the Bolt system helps Partners meet code and cover the critical fail points before the shingles go down.
CODE SUMMARY
PERIMETER EDGE FLASHING
Drip edges must be installed at eaves and rake edges, overlap adjacent segments by at least 2 inches, extend below the sheathing and onto the roof deck, and be securely fastened.
PREVENTS WOOD ROT — Correctly channeled water helps prevent structural damage at the roof edge.
BLOCKS PEST ENTRY — Covering vulnerable gaps helps keep insects and small animals out of the home.
PREVENTS FLARE-OUT — Infinity and TruFit Drip Edge create consistent seams and a cleaner finished edge.
CODE SUMMARY
ROOF-TO-WALL FLASHING
Base and cap flashings should be installed according to the shingle manufacturer's requirements using durable, corrosion-resistant materials at roof-to-wall transitions.
PROTECTS THE SIDEWALL — Directs water away before it can get behind siding and damage the wall assembly.
PROTECTS THE ROOF DECK — Helps stop water from moving beneath shingles and reaching the roof deck.
BEADED WATER LOCKS — Promotes airflow while moving water away from the roof and the home.
CODE SUMMARY
VALLEY FLASHING
Valley linings must follow manufacturer instructions. Open valleys with exposed metal lining should use corrosion-resistant material at least 24 inches wide.
PROTECTS GRANULES — Directs runoff away from vulnerable roof seams to reduce erosion and granule loss.
MOVES DEBRIS — Efficient water flow helps minimize debris buildup and long-term blockages.
RESISTS ICE DAMMING — Proper drainage reduces the chance of water freezing and backing beneath the roof.
CODE SUMMARY
UNDERLAYMENT
Underlayment should follow manufacturer instructions, begin horizontally at the eave, and maintain the specified overlaps at successive sheets and end laps.
LEAK BARRIER — A self-adhering membrane helps protect against wind-driven rain and damaging ice dams.
SYNTHETIC OR FELT — Adds a secondary layer of protection between shingles and the roof deck.
SHINGLE STARTER — Seals the first shingle row to resist blow-offs and wind-driven rain.
AIRFLOW STANDARD
VENTILATION
Balanced intake and exhaust ventilation move air through the attic to help manage temperature and moisture throughout the roof assembly.
PROPER AIRFLOW — Balanced ventilation reduces strain on heating and cooling systems and supports consistent indoor temperatures.
WITHOUT IT — Poor ventilation leaves the roof vulnerable to mold, structural damage, and compromised insulation.
BEST PRACTICES
GUTTER PROTECTION
QE TruGuard® Gutter Protection attaches to the fascia and uses a nose-forward design that admits water while helping keep leaves and debris out.
RESISTS CLOGS — Helps prevent leaves, twigs, and small debris from entering and blocking gutters.
PROTECTS FOUNDATIONS — Reduces overflow that can collect around and damage the home's foundation.
REDUCES STANDING WATER — Free-flowing gutters discourage insects and mold from growing in trapped water.
